Establishing Best Practices for eConsult/eReferral in Canada

The key goals of this year's discussion were:

To identify key components that should be included in a best practices document for eConsult and eReferral services, including the design, delivery and provision of service; and
-
To develop recommendations under the key components and identify where unable to reach consensus.
Participants attended from across Canada and engaged in interactive sessions to develop best practices. The meeting concluded with actionable suggestions for next steps.

The Canadian Forum brought together healthcare providers, researchers, decision-makers, and patients from across Canada to support the expansion of the Champlain eConsult BASE™ service across Canada. Goals of the Forum were:

Learn the latest research evidence and experience from leaders across Canada and internationally;

Share experiences with each other and with Canadian and international leaders, and
-
Influence the future of eConsult in Canada.
Participants included innovators taking a leadership role in launching the eConsult model of care in new provinces and regions (Quebec, Newfoundland and Labrador, Alberta, Manitoba, and full provincial expansion across Ontario). Patients provided concrete examples of how eConsult can improve care, and ensured a patient-centered focus was maintained throughout the Forum.

National eConsult Policy Think Tank

The National eConsult Policy Think Tank brought together partners from across Canada and internationally to explore the policy issues affecting the expansion of the Champlain eConsult BASE™ service to new jurisdictions. The Think Tank engaged a range of stakeholders including representatives from provincial and territorial governments, national organizations, healthcare providers, researchers, and patients to ensure a sufficient breadth of perspectives and experiences. Participants included representation from eleven national organizations, three provincial organizations, and a delegate from the United States, as well as five patient advisers. Participants articulated key challenges and developed next steps to address them
